THE MUSIC BOX LID, OUTSIDE

Hands and Fingers -- The child draws around the hand and then places the number for each finger. By placing his/her name in the blank, this denotes ownership.

THE MUSIC BOX LID, INSIDE

Keyboard Geography and Ear Training -- Observe the picture of the piano. Notice the black (two together and three together) and white keys. How many white keys are there and what are their names? Sing up C, D, E... and down. Notice the sound of "up" and "down". Try singing from C to the next note (D) and back to C, continuing up gradually until reaching high C.

THE MUSIC BOX, INSIDE OF BOTTOM, USING NOTE CARDS

Note Values, and Establishing a Steady Beat, or Pulse -- After taking all of the note cards out of the box, notice the counts of "1, 2, 3, 4". Start with the "whole note" card and notice that it fits perfectly in the box under the counts "1, 2, 3, 4". Continue adding the other notes half, quarter, eighth and the quarter rest. Clap and count many rhythms!

THE MUSIC BOX LID, OUTSIDE OF BOTTOM, USING BLACK NOTES

Notes of the Staff -- This introduces the grand staff. Talk about the treble and bass clef, the staff. Count the lines and spaces of the staff. Notice the shape of the black notes. Place notes so that the line goes through the note and then in the space of the staff - line and space notes. Many activities follow for understanding how melodies move (ex. by step, skip and leaps). The names of the notes are introduced from middle C (notice the dotted line).
